Mold in the Attic

Most people know by now mold is bad news, and have read or seen reports of the effects it can impose on health and/or homes. It spreads fast, and can cost a lot of money to eliminate. Mold in the attic may be caused from, but not limited to: leaks, improper ventilation, improperly installed bathroom exhaust kits, and even from basement moisture rising up the wall cavities in a process called vapor migration.

We're not going to go on about how bad it is, you already know you need it cleaned up, and you want it done right without it costing you more than it should. There are several ways to get rid of the mold stains, but you want ways to kill the attic mold and ensure it won't come back!

Attic Mold, Before and After Picture

Our Attic Mold Removal Treatment Process is Thorough and Effective.

  1. We seal off our work area from your living area to create a contained work area.
  2. We set up HEPA Air Scrubbers/Negative Air Pressure machines to filter the air in the areas we're working in.
  3. We hepa vacuum the areas we see growth off the wood to remove as much of the spore as possible from spreading.
  4. Scrub the wood with nylon or wire brushes and germicidal bleach to remove stains when and where necessary.
  5. We treat the wood with Benefect Botanical DisinfectantTM a Non Toxic Disinfectant/Deodorizer.
  6. We are now ready to final cleanup (wipe and hepa vac) our way out of the containment.

Removing mold from the attic is only part of the process in fixing your attic, if you haven't done so yet, we will help figure out what caused it in the first place. The usual culprits are insufficient or improper ventilation. In many cases, our technicians can save you time and money by providing you with a reasonable quote for installing the ventilation repairs when they discover what the problem is and the procedure to correct it.

Proper ventilation of the attic space should have intake vents, (usually soffit vents) that allow air intake for the attic, coupled with exhaust vents, (ridge vents, gable vents, turbine vents, static vents or power vents controlled by temperature and/or humidity sensors near the peak of the roof) to exhaust the air.

You don't want more than 1 type of exhaust vent because the higher elevated exhaust vents can pull in air from the lower exhaust vents, sometimes rendering the soffits and creating improper circulation. (Also referred to as "Short-Circuiting the ventilation.) When it comes to exhaust vents, we recommend a ridge vent with external baffles such as the "Cobra Snow Country" or "Air Vent II Ridge Vent" for maximum air circulation and heat/moisture exhaustion from all the ridge peaks, including hip ridges

A properly ventilated attic space extends the life of your home's roof. Proper roof ventilation will remove heat and moisture from the attic space. If an attic is not properly ventilated, trapped heat and moisture can raise energy costs, cause ice dams, promote the growth of Fungi and damage your Roof System. Condensation inside attics can be bad enough to be mistaken for a roof leak, and even make it rain in the area from so much condensation.
